10 Best Things to Know Before Visiting NYC in December

5.  Show Tickets. Buy all your Broadway and off-Broadway show tickets prior to coming to Manhattan.  Show tickets sell fast during the holidays so act now.  TKTS Discount Booths have deals up to 50% off.  Expect long lines and few tickets at the TKTS Discount Booth in Times Square which sells day-of-performance tickets.  For evening or next day matinee shows visit the South Street Seaport Booth.

4.  Travel Early. The New York Airports are some of the busiest in the world and flights land and take off constantly.  During inclement weather flights could be delayed or canceled.  If you want to be in New York City on a particular day make your flight plans at least two days prior and avoid weekend flight times.  Don’t let bad weather, a cancelled flight, or a delayed flight upset your holiday.

3.  Laminated pocket street map of Manhattan or a NFT -Not For Tourists, New York City guide book. New York is best experienced when you know you way around the city. Do a little research online to see what sections and places of Manhattan you want to see.  Get an idea of where they are located on your NYC map and what NYC Metro Stations are nearby.  If you need to check your map while exploring New York step over to the side of the sidewalk or into a store.

2.  Crowds.  During the holiday season New York is crawling with huge crowds of people.  All of the major attractions are packed.  For the lightest crowds go during the week as early as possible in the morning and avoid major holiday attractions on the weekends.  If you bring children, keep an eye on them.  Stores and streets remain crowded and it is easy to get lost.

1.  Clothing. Bring long johns, a t-shirt, a long sleeve shirts, a windproof jacket, gloves , a scarf, umbrella, and sweater for layering in any type of weather.  In New York the temperatures in December vary greatly day to day.  To conquer Manhattan in December, expect an average temperature between the 50s and 30s.  Weather can get much colder, I have experienced New Years Eve weather in the low teens so be prepared.
