10 Best Things to Know Before Visiting NYC in December

10.  Snow? It does not always snow in NYC in December.  There have been many Decembers in New York  with no snow.  Although it did snow on December 26-27, 1947 approximately 26.5 inches!  If you really want snow, wait for January, as it is the coolest month of the year and your best chances for snow.  Either way, keep warm, it will be cold!

9.  Foot Traffic. Once again, this is the busiest time of the year, so be ready for awful foot traffic!  Yes, I said it, foot traffic!  Not just in the stores, or at attractions, but on the streets! You’ll be surprised how long it will take you to go a short distance.  Give yourself plenty of time and be patient!

8.  Use the Restroom When You Can. In Manhattan you cannot always get to a public restroom easily.  Department stores have them but expect long lines in December.  It is best to get it all out before you leave your hotel or apartment.  Try to go again when you stop somewhere to eat.  You know what happened to Jerry Sienfeld and George when they had to pee in public.

7. Comfortable Shoes.  Come to New York City ready to walk.  The average New Yorker walks several miles a day and is this a big reason New Yorkers are so thin.  Bring comfortable shoes and thick socks that keep your feet warm.  You will be on your feet all day.  Bring a few band aids in case a blister or hot spot forms.

6. Scams and Theft. Street vendors sell fake perfume, jewelry, watches, purses, and bootleg movies. These vendors setup outside the most popular department stores, downtown, and in Chinatown.  If the price is too good to be true it is.  You will be lucky if the watch works for a week and doesn’t turn your wrist green. The purses are poorly made and will not last.  The DVDs are often very low quality picture and sound.  I prefer buying t-shirts, winter hats, scarfs, an emergency tie, or sunglasses on the street instead.

During the busy season and crowded areas are the most popular times for theft.  Be careful, try to keep your purses at home and keep your wallets in unreachable places.  Throw on a fanny pack if you have totally thrown your looks out the window.  I carry valuables, including my wallet and money, in my front pocket and prefer to wear a backpack when necessary.
