NYC’s 10 Best Sandwich Shops (5 to 1)
5. Frankies 17. 17 Clinton Street, LES. Best Meatball Parmigiana Hero in New York City. Clinton Street has many great restaurants including the Italian restaurant Frankies 17. Frankies 17 specializes in cured meats, cheeses, antipasto, salads, sandwiches, and pasta. Also a large wine selection. However, I stick to their meatball parmigiana for takeout. Their meatballs are not too heavy and no one serves a meatball parmigiana on a better bread. Dark restaurant ambiance is good for a date. See: NYC’s 10 Best Italian Restaurants
4. Porchetta. 110 East 7th Street, East Village. Best Italian Roasted Pork Sandwich. These pork sandwiches are made with slow cooked pork loin topped with crispy pork skin chips. Porchetta is a tiny shop that only serves their pork sandwich or cheese sandwich. Pork sandwich is priced at $10.
3. Mike’s Deli. 2344 Arthur Avenue, Bronx. Best Italian Deli Sandwiches. On Arthur Avenue since 1922. I like the Big Mike Combo with mortadella, ham, salami, capicola, and provolone. Extra hungry? Get the Yankee Stadium Big Boy which consists of a Big Mike Combo extra heavy with fresh mozzarella made in-house, lettuce and sweet or hot peppers “Morante Style”. Mike’s Deli also makes a killer eggplant parmigiana that you can get as a platter, hero, or on focaccia bread.
2. Katz Delicatessen. 205 East Houston Street, LES. Best New York City Pastrami Sandwich Shops. Katz is the most well known delicatessen in New York City and been around since 1888. Their world famous pastrami is served on rye bread and is cut right in front of you at the counter by one of their skilled cutters. Avoid this place on the weekends, it gets packed more than usual with busloads of tourists. Not cheap, a typical pastrami sandwich is around $15 but the sandwich is huge. 1. Banh Mi Saigon Bakery. 138 Mott Street, Little Italy. Best Vietnamese Sandwiches in the city. If you pass this shop in Little Italy you might not even notice it but at $3 to $4 per sandwich this is the best sandwich deal in Manhattan. Don’t bother eating an Italian sandwich in Little Italy, come to Banh Mi Saigon Bakery. Vietnamese sandwiches are French inspired which are made on baguettes with various meats, carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, and dressing. My favorites on the menu are the #1 – Banh Mi Saigon (made with pork) and the #4 – Banh Mi Pate Cha (a patte and deli meat sandwich). Ask for the #4 spicy if you want a little kick in your sandwich.
