5. Convivio. 45 Tudor City Place, Midtown East. This Southern Italian restaurant located in Manhattan’s Tudor City neighborhood remarkable. Convivio’s authenic cuisine is flavorful with tomatoes, pesto, pancetta, and sea urchin. The art and soul behind each dish is spectacular. Average main course is $25.
4. Del Posto. 85 10th Avenue, Meatpacking District. Joe Bastianich, Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali have created an upscale Italian environment and cuisine at Del Posto. Combining classic Italian dishes with a contemporary twist, the entrees are original and magnificent. Recommend the tasting menu for $95 to get the full impact of the sensational menu.
3. Al Di La Trattoria. 248 5th Avenue, Brooklyn. This cozy Italian restaurant is the best in Brooklyn and is always packed. Al Di La does not take reservations, so expect a wait. Try the corner wine bar while you wait for your table. Highly recommend the Casunsiei ravioli filled with beets and ricotta, melted butter and poppy seeds. Also, try the Risotto con nero, but expect a 20 minute wait. Superb Italian cuisine that will not disappoint. Plates are approximately $30.
2. Scarpetta. 355 W 14th Street, Meatpacking District, West Village. Scarpetta, an Italian expression that means “little shoe” for the shape of a loaf of bread, was named one of the “Best New Restaurants in America” in 2008 by Esquire Magazine. The restaurant and chef have received numerous awards since it’s opening. Favorites include creamy polenta, the duck and foie gras ravioli and the cavatelli, which includes brasied rabbit, parsnip and mint. Average price per entree is $27.
1. Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca. 110 Waverly Place, Greenwich Village. Opened by Joseph Bastianich and celebrity chef, Mario Batali in 1998 with scores of praises and awards. Batali brings entrees with the freshest seasonal produce, Italian cheeses, meat, game and seafood, and many other ingredients that will amaze the pallet. The menu is fantastic.
