5 Napkin Burger.  2315 Broadway, at 84th Street.  5 Napkin would rank a little higher but they are on the more expensive end with burgers costing around $14 without any sides.  They also offer many other “burgers” on their menu which are really sandwiches made with tuna, lamb, turkey, and other ground beef alternatives.  Stick with the original or bacon cheddar burger.

Harriet’s Kitchen502 Amsterdam Avenue, between 84th & 85th Streets.  This takeout spot offers excellent comfort food like wine braised beef, roasted chicken, meat loaf, chicken pot pie, and one of the best burgers available in the Upper West Side.  They keep the burger menu simple, offering hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and bacon burgers.

Shake Shack.  366 Columbus Avenue, between 77th Street & 78th Street.  The first and most well known of the niche burger joints.  They keep it simple with high quality ingredients and a limited menu.  If you like mushrooms, try the Shack Stack which is a burger with meunster cheese, a deep fried portabella mushroom, and their special Shack sauce.

Lansky’s Old World Deli.  235 Columbus Avenue, between 70th & 71st Street.  Lanskys is my go to NYC diner offering great food and pricing.  Their specials sometimes include 50 cent sliders, 25 cent wings, and pitchers of Brooklyn lager for only $10.  The sliders are fresh and high quality meat.  You cannot even get that cheap of a deal at McDonalds.  The full size burgers are huge at 10 ounces and if you are hamburgered out they make some of the best sandwiches around too.  They have meal portions for the largest appetites.  During the summer, stop by for their fried chicken to-go basket and head to Central Park with friends for a picnic.

Island Burgers & Shakes422 Amsterdam, between 80th & 81st.  Island Burgers just opened a new location in the UWS after much success with their original Hell’s Kitchen location on 766 Ninth Avenue, between 51st & 52nd Street.  I first discovered the original location when I planned to eat at Empanda Mama but was turned off by the rude waitress.  A burger shop with a giant list of burgers and special ingredients.  The menu is sectioned into simple, mild, a little kick, decadent, and hot burgers.  Try my favorite, the Barzel’s Burger, served blackened with jack cheese, bacon, and horseradish, on a ciabbata bun.
