NYC’s 10 Best Beer Gardens and Beer Halls
Studio Square. 35-33 36th Street, Astoria, Queens. Studio Square is a massive NY beer garden with indoor and and outdoor seating, fire pits, and plenty of microbrews and German beers on tap at Studio Square. Liters are around $13, pitchers $18 and all selections are the same price. Come on a weeknight to avoid the weekend crowds. Basic bar fare of wings, fries, burgers, etc. to eat. Offers a large projection screen for sporting events.
La Birreria Eately. 200 5th Avenue, Flatiron District. Drink some drafts and eat Italian meats and cheeses from this rooftop beer garden located above Eately in the Flatiron District. It is the only beer garden I am aware of that is on top of a building and features a retractable glass roof section. The beer selection is rare varieties priced $8 and above, with the meat and cheese trays starting at $11. Draft include 3-4 types of house brews and 10 additional beers on tap.
Zum Schneider. 107 Avenue C, between 7th & 8th Streets, East Village. Always around 11-12 beers on tap and exclusively carries Hofbräuhaus Traunstein selections alongside German bottled beers. My favorite bottled variety is Aventinus, a strong and sweet bock beer. They serve food so come hungry and chow down on a classic German meal with your beer of choice.
McSorley’s Old Ale House. 15 East 7th Street, East Village. When the doors opened in 1854 this NY beer bar was called “The Old House at Home” and is considered the oldest active bar in the city. Today, the bar now renamed to McSorley’s, still only serves two types of beer – a light and dark. While technically not a beer hall or beer garden, McSorley’s must be mentioned during any serious NYC beer bar discussion. Every serious NYC beer drinker must visit this historic spot and try both flavors while standing on the saw dust covered floors at least once in their lifetime.
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. 2919 24th Avenue, Astoria, Queens. In business since 1910. Large selection of Czech, Slovakian, Belgian, German, and US draft beers at reasonable prices, around $16 per pitcher. Traditional Czech dishes and large grill selection. A huge outdoor section filled with picnic tables so it is perfect for large groups. The oldest and best NY beer garden.
