5. Great Jones Cafe. 54 Great Jones Street, NoHo. Exterior hole in the wall with some of the best creole, Cajun, and southern food in the city. New Orleans style jambalaya and gumbo dishes are the best items on the menu. Also serve excellent catfish and jalapeno cornbread. Weekend brunches 11:30 am to 4:00 pm are a hit. See 10 best breakfast restaurants in NYC.
4. Mitchell Fish & Chips. 617A Vanderbilt Avenue, Brooklyn. Soul food in Brooklyn. Limited space for eating. Fried chicken is the most popular item on the menu. Also, recommend the collard greens, okra, corn bread and mac and cheese. Make fresh lemonade and southern iced tea daily. Tried the sweet potato pie for dessert. See other Brooklyn articles.
3. Mama’s Food Shop. 200 East 3rd Street, East Village. Small catering kitchen serving take out and delivery. Entrees include huge portions of the following: fried chicken, roasted pork shoulder, roasted chicken, talapia, and bacon-wrapped meatloaf. Also serves weekend brunch from noon to 5pm
2. Blue Smoke. 116 E 27th Street, Flatiron District. Offers Kansas City, Memphis and Texas style BBQ slow cooked, smoked ribs. Recommend the Kansas City or Memphis style ribs and sweet potato fries. After your meal, or if you want to eat dinner with music, head downstairs to the bar Jazz Standard. Jazz Standard is owned by and also serves Blue Smoke BBQ. Jazz Standard offers the best up and coming jazz performers in New York City and around the country.
1. Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. 700 W. 125th St. at 12th Avenue, West Harlem. A casual southern style BBQ restaurant with their own version of southern style ribs, similar to St. Louis and Memphis BBQ ribs. Slow smoked ribs, special seasoning, and their quality meat outshines the competition. Biker bar and roadhouse decor is always crowded, be prepared to wait. Best ribs in New York City and my favorite restaurant in Harlem. Also, try the fried green tomatoes and mac n cheese. If you want chicken wings, they make a mean BBQ version here, and sometimes I prefer them over the ribs.
