5. Chavella’s. 732 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn. A casual Mexico City cuisine restaurant vibrant in color, flavor and food. Enter and you will feel like you are in Mexico with it’s colorful decor and the Mexican menu. You can get plenty of good Mexican food for a just a few bucks here.

4. Rosa Mexicano. 3 locations: 1063 1st Avenue, Midtown East; 61 Columbus Avenue at Lincoln Center, Upper West Side; 9 E 18th Street, Union Square. In my opinion, Rosa Mexicano is the fanciest and best high-end Mexican restaurant in New York City. You will feel like you are in an ancient Mexican town with the rustic, handcrafted furnishings and warm, vibrant decor. This upscale, Mexican restaurant and lounge has excellent entrees that mix the old with the new in a delicious, artistic way. The pomegranate margaritas are amazing.

3. Itzocan Cafe. 438 E 9th Street, East Village. A small, exotic, warm Mexican restaurant with a French twist in East Village. The music, atmosphere, flavors and aroma are exquisite and come at surprisingly low prices. You will be stunned with the low prices because this place is romantic and the food entrees are beautifully presented with mouthwatering flavors.

2. Florencia 13. 185 Sullivan Street, Greenwich Village. This family run Mexican restaurant and bar in Greenwich Village has become a hit with the locals. It’s authentic Southern California Mexican-style food, beer, and great margaritas give you the true Los Angeles Mexican-American feel filled with spices and plenty of caliente food. Note: this is not the place to go if you want a quiet meal.

1. La Esquina Corner Deli. 114 Kenmare Street, SoHo. A rustic style authentic Mexican restaurant, located below the corner deli, in SoHo has all you will want from tamales, tacos and tortas. The food is terrific and the atmosphere is warm and casual. Great tacos in all varieties.
