NYC’s 10 Best Gyros and Shawarma page 2
Yatagan Kebab House. 104 MacDougal Street, Greenwich Village. A delicious eatery in the village that’s down the street from our #1 pick. You will find great, cheap deals where the food is juicy, tender and full of flavor. Unlike Mamoun’s, you will have a better chance to find a seat and enjoy a gyro at Yatagan. They even have tasty $2 falafel sandwiches.
Kwik Meal Cart. 45th Street & 5th or 6th Avenue, Theater District. Not your typical gyro spot, but definitely a spot to mention for gyro lovers. Kwik Meal has great chicken and lamb gyro-like pita sandwiches that are finger-licking delicious. If want a twist and like hot food, try their spicy green sauce. They use actual lamb chunks instead of the standard processed lamb others use on their gyros. Explore and experiment!
Taksim. 1030 Second Avenue, Midtown East. Tasty, reliable and inexpensive casual restaurant in Midtown. Taksim has great gyro style sandwiches and plates with a homemade, flavorful taste. Also, love their lamb and the hummus.
Halal Cart on 53rd and 6th. 53rd Street & 6th Avenue, Theater District. Located across the street from the Hilton, this Halal cart has amazing food that has been raved about. The meat is moist and the sauce is savory. Flavorful food that’s so cheap you can get as much as your stomach desires. Don’t miss out on the amazing white sauce that makes this gyro one of our favorites in the big apple.
Mamoun’s Falafel. Two locations; 119 MacDougal Street, Greenwich Village; 22 St Marks Place, East Village. Opened in 1971, Mamoun’s a family owned and operated Middle Eastern spot is a longtime favorite. Their village location is historic and famous and has been featured in many magazines, newspapers, books as well as the food network and the travel guide channel. The food is authentic, made from scratch and cheap. For under $10, you can get anything on the menu. They are also famous for their falafel and lamb. Mamoun’s is hands down the best gyro in New York City.

FYI Gyros is NOT kebab. Ignorant Americans.
“Yatagan Kebab House” use to live across the street, neither mamoun nor Yatagan sells gyros JUST Kebab
hey viktor – the mere fact that you can call us “ignorant” shows the amount of freedom you have here in our “ignorant” country. try saying that wherever the hell you’re from! God Bless America…!!
Hi viktor, may I suggest you look at the history of the Greek gyros/yeeros and the Turkish doner, and reflect on their shared history? Granted, the Greeks and the Turks (I love them both equally) generally don’t like to consider their own shared history, but it is shared nontheless. The Arabs also have a shawarma which is similar. Heck, the slavic chevup is in fact a small kebab rather than a skinless sausage!
