5. Ted’s Montana Grill. 110 W. 51st between 6th and 7th. Yes, we know this place is a chain. But for bison burgers, there is no better place in NYC. The Kitchen Sink (the works, with a fried egg on top) and the George’s Cadillac (cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce) are top notch.
4. Island Burgers and Shakes. 766 9th between 51st and 52nd. Get the Napalm if you want to clear out your sinuses.
3. Corner Bistro. 331 W. 4th at Jane. No surprise here, one of the best for years. Best to go during off-hours.
2. Shake Shack. Madison Square Park. Come right at 11am when they open unless you want to stand in line for an hour. Sundaes might be better than the burgers. See: NYC’s 10 Best Parks
1. Black Iron Burger Shop. 540 E. 5th between Avenue A and Avenue B. Very fresh, nothing ever frozen. Get the Iron Horse burger (with horseradish cheddar), onion rings and a Dogfish Head. Seriously.
