Clay25 West 14th Street.  Clay is one of the nicest gyms in NYC and a step above Equinox.  They pride themselves on having an uncrowded, limited member facility with top amenities and a relaxing environment.  Clay even includes a member lounge with fireplace, rooftop deck for tanning, and private saunas.  Bring your own mp3 player if you want to listen to music, they do not have any playing at their tranquil location on 14th Street.

Sports Club LATwo locations45 Rockefeller Plaza & 330 East 61st Street, between First and Second Avenue, Upper East Side.  Just come with your workout shoes, they will provide the rest.  The Rockefeller Plaza is a 90,000 square ft. facility including a a spa, restaurant, bar, shoe shining, hair salon, steam room, saunas, and several studios.  Group yoga, Pilates, and other classes.

NYC’s Best Martial Arts Gyms:

Five Points Academy277 Canal Street.  Muay Thai, Judo, stick fighting and a full weight training facility with strength & conditioning classes.  Come just for the gym and weight training facitlity or try one of the beginner Muay Thai classes.  Unlike other kickboxing classes around Manhattan, you will actually learn some technique.  To up your training try Judo a Japanese form of grappling involving throws.  At Five Points Academy you can come in on your own or participate in general fitness classes or become an expert fighter with Judo and Muay Thai.

Alliance Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu NYC98 3rd Avenue, 2nd Floor.  Head instructor, Fabio Clemente, is  a 5-time Pan American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion who trained with the Machado.  Jiujitsu, a form of fighting with an emphasis in grappling, is known as the best single form of self-defense in the world.  It was started by Indian monks, migrated to Japan, and eventually found its way into Brazil.  There, it was further refined by Helio Gracie to remove the strength requirements of the techniques in favor of positioning and leverage.  This style is now called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  If you are looking to lose weight and learn an effective form of fighting all at once try BJJ.  With a proper diet, it is not uncommon to lose 10 pounds or more the first month of training BJJ.

NYC’s Best Gym with a Swimming Pool:

The McBurney YMCA125 West 14th Street.  The nicest YMCA in Manhattan featuring the best full lap pool.  The YMCA is one of the best gyms in the city because you can become a member without paying an arm and a leg and swim laps in their indoor pools at most locations.  Having a pool is rare for any fitness club in New York City and no pool facility is as large and nice as the McBurney YMCA.  A bathing cap is required for all swimmers.
