NYC’s 10 Best Gyms & Fitness Centers

Ensure you like the gym’s location(s).  I prefer to have a gym close to my work so I can go there right afterwords.  Others prefer a workout facility closer to home.  Some prefer to join a gym in New York with multiple locations.

Ask the gym if they offer a trial membership or free guest pass so you can evaluate the facility before deciding to become a member.  Go to several different prospective gyms to see the good and bad, ultimately selecting the gym you like the best.  As a bonus you might be able to go around for a few weeks to different gyms working out without paying membership fees.

Negotiate the price.  Let’s face it, a gym membership in New York is no small investment.  They typically range from $30 to hundreds of dollars a month.  Do not be afraid to walk away from a price that you think is too high.  Think about it for few weeks as you continue to shop around and sample the alternatives.  There are plenty of gyms in NYC to choose from.  Always look for promotional offers, this is the best time to sign up as a new member as rates are reduced and sign up fees are waived.

NYC’s Best Quick Workout:

The Black Box, CrossFit, NYC25 West 26th Street.  Why waste hours working out?  CrossFit is a new way of working out using compound exercises and short intense workouts.  Most CrossFit workouts take less than 40 minutes total including a warmup and the exercise routines are rarely repeated.  Unlike other workout methods, CrossFit focuses on efficient, practical, and high calorie burning exercises like bodyweight routines, kettlebells movements, and Olympic lifts.  Workouts are intense because you are encouraged to move quickly with little to no rest between sets.  Therefore, cardio and strength workouts are combined.  Visit crossfit.com and crossfitnyc.org for more details.  Beginners are welcome and all workouts are scaled according to your abilities.

NYC’s Best Yoga Studios:

Pure YogaTwo locations: 203 East 86th Street at 3rd Avenue (212.360.1888) and 204 West 77th Street at Amsterdam Avenue (212.877.2025).  Most yoga studios in NYC offer few classes and few options.  At Pure Yoga, they offer the most popular yoga styles and have the largest class schedule of any studio in Manhattan.  They even have classes for mothers and babies and meditation.  A high end NYC yoga studio, Pure Yoga is always has a super clean facility and changing room with the best amenities for all members.

Integral Yoga Institute227 W 13th Street, between 7th Avenue & Greenwich Avenue.  Hatha yoga. in West Village.  Hatha yoga classes are available daily from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.  Unlike some other NYC yoga studios, the Integral Yoga Institute is all about yoga.  If you only take the occasional yoga class this is perfect as you because you can pay per class.  Includes a bookstore and health food section downstairs.

NYC’s Best Bootcamp Gym:

Warrior Fitness Bootcamp29 West 35th St, 3rd Floor.  Many people do much better in a class style setting when it comes to workouts.  With a group, a leader introduces and explains exercises as well as pushes the group to perform above expectations.  Other members of the group also encourage others in the class building teamwork.  With a bootcamp, this method  mimics military style basic training.  Workouts focus on bodyweight exercises as well as other training methods using tires, rope climbing, and resistance training.  Visit www.warriorfitnessbootcamp.com for more details and contact information.

NYC’s Best 24 Hour Gym:

Crunch Fitness8 Locations in Manhattan and 2 in Brooklyn, New York City.  Other gyms are open 24 hours but none that offer the amount and variety of classes as offered at Crunch.  They also have some of the best fitness instructors in Manhattan.  Check out the Lafayette location, it is the best with its large space, knowledgeable staff, and diverse membership.  This place can get crowded on the weekends and after work.  Try to workout before lunch for the least crowds.  See crunch.com for more.
