New York City’s 10 Best Sports Activities

New York City’s 10 Best Sports Activities (5 to 1)

5.  Rock Climbing. The Sports Center Climbing Wall at Chelsea Piers, Pier 60 and Manhattan Plaza Health Club Climbing Wall, 482 West 43rd Street, between 9th & 10th Avenue.  You can also try the $15 day pass at City Climbers Club (AKA 59th Street Gym) 533 West 59th Street, between 10th and 11th.

4.  Handball.  Handball is an Irish game that was brought to New York City at the end of the 19th century.  It is a great cardio exercise requiring a racquetball, at least two players, and a large wall.  Handball courts are located in many public parks throughout the city.  Visit www.nycgovparks.org/facilities/handball for a list of handball courts in New York City.

3.  Tennis.  Tennis is a good sport and exercise for men and women of all ages.  There are plenty of courts within the city and many are free.  Indoor tennis courts are available at Sportime at Randall’s Island, Randall’s Island Park and Sutton East Tennis Club, York Avenue and 60th Street.  Visit www.nycgovparks.org/facilities/tennis to see a list of public courts in New York City.  Reserve a court for 1-800-201-PARKS.

2.  Jogging.  The best places to run in New York City include Central Park, along the Hudson River, and the East River.  Visit www.mapmyrun.com/find-run/united-states/ny/manhattan for running routes in Manhattan.

1.  Bicycling.  Whether you are a commuter cycler or bike for exercise, there are plenty of bicycle routes throughout Manhattan.  Many streets throughout Manhattan have designated bike lanes.  My favorite scenic biking route is going over the Brooklyn Bridge to the Brooklyn Promenade.  I also enjoy riding in Central Park as it is safer than trying to compete with all the taxis on the city streets.  Rent bikes from Bike and Roll in Battery Park, Governer’s Island, Riverside Park, Prospect Park, Central Park, or Pier 84 at Hudson River Park.  Go to www.nycbikemaps.com for a list of bike routes or checkout www.ridethecity.com for safe biking directions.
