5. American Museum of Natural History. Central Park West at 79th Street. On a rainy day the museums are going to be packed but that is not much different than it is on any other day. Besides if you aren’t into crowds why are you in NYC to begin with. I love checking out the model Egyptian tombs and dinosaur bones. Plus there is a massive collection of taxidermy on display. Fans of Night at the Museum and The Squid and the Whale will feel right at home. See: New York City’s 10 Best Museums
4. Loews Lincoln IMAX Theater. 1998 Broadway (at 68th). Watch the latest blockbuster film in IMAX on the Upper West Side. See: 10 Best Movie Theaters in New York City
3. Take the NBC studio tour. 30 Rockefeller Plaza at West 49th Street (between 5th/6th Avenues). It is best to call in advance for a reservation – (212) 664-3700. The tour lasts around and hour and you see many of their taping studios including the Saturday Night Live set. See: NYC’s Best Guided Tours
2. Become an audience member at a studio TV show. While you cannot easily get tickets to TV shows like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart or Saturday Night Live, it is possible to be part of a tv show studio audience on short notice. Look for the guys and gals on the street in Time Square soliciting people to become part of a live studio audience. See: New York City’s Best TV to Become an Audience Member
1. Broadway shows. Going to a Broadway show, even if you are not a fan of shows, is a must to fully experience New York City. Tickets are not cheap, they usually cost around $100 but if you are lucky you will recognize one or two actors from tv or movies and shows are genuinely entertaining. Go to Broadway.com to see a current listing of shows. Purchase same day Broadway and Off-Broadway show tickets at the TKTS booth located on Broadway and 47th Street in Times Square.
