5.  Ronald Perelman – 12 billion.  Perelman learned business the hard way with strict lessons as a youngster from his a father who succeeded in the paper industry and steel manufacturing.  Ronald Perelman’s company, MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings Inc., invests in grocery, cigar, licorice, makeup, car, photography, television, camping, security, lottery, jewelry, banks, and comic book industries.

4.  Carl Icahn – 13 billion.  Born and raised in Queens, Icahn began his career on Wall Street.  He owns or has owned positions in many types of companies like RJR Nabisco, TWA, Texaco, Phillips Petroleum, Western Union, Gulf & Western, and Viacom and other investments.

3.  John Paulson – 15.5 billion.  Paulson was born in Queens in 1955 and is the wealthiest of the hedge fund managers in NYC with his company Paulson & Co.  As of 2010, he invested the majority of his private wealth in gold which grew 3 billion dollars in 1 year.

2.  Michael Bloomberg – 19.5 billion.  Before becoming the mayor of NYC, Bloomberg started a media company centered around financial news and information.  In 1982, he realized financial news and information was extremely valuable to the financial community, and they needed a more reliable, complete, and faster source for such data.  In 1982, Merriyl Lynch became Bloomberg’s first customer and today over 250,000 Bloomberg terminals are used worldwide.

1.  David Koch – 25 billion.  David Koch earned an engineering degree from MIT.  Koch’s father started a firm building oil refineries after created a new method to extract gasoline from crude oil.  His brother Charles and David Koch currently own 42% each of Koch Industries, the 2nd largest privately held company in the US.  Today the company employs 70,000 and hit 100 billion in annual sales in 2008.  With smart investing, he just beat out Bloomberg for the first time to be known as the wealthiest man in New York City.
