Forbes annually ranks the richest men in America.  These are the top ten as of September 2011 who list their residence as New York, NY.

10.  Richard LeFrak – 5 billion.  Born in 1945, he joined the family real estate firm in 1968 which holds one of the greatest portfolios of US real estate.  In 2003 he became CEO of his family firm, and is known as one of the most iconic of the NYC moguls.

9.  Ralph Lauren – 6.1 billion.  One of the richest men in fashion in the US came from the Bronx.  After starting in the fashion industry designing ties for Beau Brummel, Ralph Lauren put American fashion design on the map with his famous brand Polo.  He started Ralph Lauren in 1967 with his signature preppy clothing style.

8.  Leonard Lauder – 6.3 billion.  An heir to the Lauder cosmetic business, Leonard Lauder is a chairman and former CEO of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. which owns cosmetic lines Estée Lauder, Clinique, MAC Cosmetics, Aveda, Bobbi Brown and La Mer.

7.  Samuel Newhouse, Jr. – 6.6 billion.  Chairman and CEO of Advance Publications which most notably owns Conde Nast which publishes Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker among others.

6.  Rupert Murdoch – 7.4 billion.  Originally born in Melbourne, Australia, Murdoch is the founder, CEO, and chairman of News Corporation, the second largest media conglomerate in the world.  News Corporation owns HarperCollins, the National Star, New York Post, 20th Century Fox, and the Fox News Channel along with 100s of other media outlets worldwide.
