10. The Manhattan Well Murder. Lower Manhattan, December 22, 1799. When Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton were friends, they teamed up with another lawyer, Henry Brockholst Livingston, to defend Levi Weeks in the first recorded murder trial in the US. Levi was accused of killing a woman he was going to marry named Elma Sands. With the powerhouse defense team, Levi Weeks was acquitted after 5 minutes of jury deliberation. This trial and defense attorney team have been compared to OJ Simpson’s “dream team” hired for his defense during his murder trial.
9. Central Park Preppy Murder Case. Central Park, Manhattan. Jennifer Levin was found in Central Park murdered early in the morning on August 26, 1986. Robert Chambers Jr. killed her while walking with her through Central Park late that night. The case became known as the Preppy Murder Case. According to records Jennifer broke up with Chambers the night of the murder. This murder was especially brutal including bite marks. During the trial Chambers claimed self defense. He received 15 years for the murder.
8. Chelsea Hotel. 222 West 23rd Street, Chelsea. On October 12, 1978 Nancy Spungen was found dead in the bathroom of room 100 of the Chelsea Hotel while with boyfriend Sid Vicious, a member of the punk band Sex Pistols. Sid Vicious was eventually arrested for the crime but claimed he was in a drug induced stupor and could not remember. He overdosed on heroin while on bail prior to going to trial.
7. Park Sheraton Hotel (now the Park Central Hotel). 870 Seventh Avenue between 55th & 56th Street, Theater District. Mobster Albert Anastasia of Murder Inc. steps in the barber shop in the Park Sheraton Hotel on October 25, 1957 for his morning shave. As the bodyguard is on a walk from parking, two men storm the shop and shoot Anastasia who’s face is being covered with a warm towel for a shave. Supposedly Anastasia jumped at his attackers but did not realized he jumped towards their reflection in the mirror. Anastasia was riddled with bullets until he fell to the floor. This style mob murder scene has been mimicked in Hollywood’s best NYC gangster movies where guys are killed in barber shops.
6. The Falls. 218 Lafayette Street, SoHo. On February of 2006, a bouncer of The Falls agreed to take 24 year old Imette St. Guillen home one night. She was found naked, tied up, and gagged on Fountain Avenue in Brooklyn. Her convicted killer Darryl Littlejohn, the bouncer at The Falls, received life in prison for her murder. The Falls has been closed and is now called 218 Lafayette St.
