10 Best Art Museum Exhibits To See in NYC, January, 2010

New York City is well known for their art museums.  While many permanent exhibits are world renown, the museums also treat us to excellent temporary exhibits.  Here are NYC’s 10 best temporary art exhibits to see in January 2010.

1. Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present. Brooklyn Musuem; 200 Eastern Parkway. See photographs of Micheal Jackson, David Bowie and more at the free exhibit in Brooklyn.  Open till January 31st.

2. Best, With, Against, and Yet: Abstraction and the Ready-Made Gesture. The Kitchen; 512 W 19th Street. Contemporary abstract work from today’s artists. Shown through Saturday, January 16th.  Free.

3. Cinnabar: The Chinese Art of Carved Lacquer. Metropolitan Museum of Art; 1000 Fifth Avenue. See intricate wood carvings made between the 12th and 18th centuries.  Stop by and see the impressive eight-panel folding screen portraying a warrior celebration from the Qing Dynasty.  Showing through February 21st.   Adult admission is $20.

4. Approaching Abstraction. American Folk Art Museum; 45 W 53rd Street. Highlights more than 40 artists in this entertaining, diverse show.  This one will be around through September 5th.  Admission is $9 for adults, and free on Fridays after 5:30 pm.

5. Morphological Mutiny: Steve DiBenedetto, Alexander Ross and James Siena. David Nolan Gallery; 527 W 29th Street. View the paintings, drawings and clay models as these three artists collaborate.  Some pieces may remind you of Dali.  Showings through January 23rd.
