10:00 AM to 6:00 PM – Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Festival.  2nd Ave between 45th and 57th Street.  Street fair of 400 vendors (food, crafts, and clothing) and live entertainment with over 80,000 in attendance.

12:00 PM – J&R Musicfest & Tech Expo.  Across from City Hall Park at 23 Park Row, Downtown.  Free concert series and expo.  Thursday includes the tech expo with live performances Friday and Saturday.  Saturday’s concert features Marcus Johnson, Eli Paperboy Reed, and Leela James.

3:00 PM to 7:00 PM – Charlie Parker Jazz Festival.  Marcus Garvey Park, east of Lenox Avenue between 120th & 124th Street.  Top jazz musicians today in merge to honor jazz great Charlie Parker.  This jazz concert location was chosen to reflect where Charlie Parker lived and worked.

8:00 PM – Summer HD Festival presents Tosca.  Jose Robertson Plaza at the Lincoln Center, Upper West Side.  A screening of the opera composed by Giacomo Puccini.  2,800 free seats available, no tickets required.

8:00 PM – Central Park Conservancy Film Festival presents Manhattan (1979).   Movies shown nightly from August 24th to August 28th in Central Park’s landscape, just north of the Great Lawn behind Mineral Springs.  Space opens 6:30 PM, bring a picnic.  No alcohol allowed and bags subject to search.  This night see Woody Allen’s famous Manhattan also staring Diane Keaton and Michael Murphy.

10.  Daffy’s.  50 Broadway, Wallstreet, Manhattan.  462 Broadway at Grand Street Soho, Manhattan.  3 East 18th Street, Manhattan.  Best for the basics and children’s clothing.  I have found decent shorts as well.  Basic suits for men and women.  Also have kitchenware.

9.  Burlington Coat Factory.  707 6th Avenue.  Best for coats, handbags, and baby clothes.  Must go through many racks of clothes to look for a gem.  Don’t expect customer service, expect good bargains.

8.  Marshall’s.  2 Manhattan locations – 517 East 117th St, Ste 401 & Harlem Center, 125 West 125th Street.  If patient, you can find a good deal in Marshall’s.  They have the usual clothing items and designer suits along with a large kitchen and home department.

7.  TJ Maxx.  620 Avenue of the Americas.  Good variety of discounted apparel and often find real deals.  Great place for polos and basic 2 button suits from designers such as Calvin Klein.  Quality bathroom towels and kitchen items.  I always find the softest bath towels at TJ Maxx.  Even carry fitness items from clothing to yoga mats.

6.  Syms.  42 Trinity Place.  400 Park Avenue. Up to 90% off retail.  Recommend coming to Syms for suits or dress shirts.  Large tie selection.  Top end suit designers include Hugo Boss and Hickey Freeman.

I Do Not Doubt I Am Limitless: Walt Whitman’s Brooklyn.  Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1 Harbor View Lawn Furman Street off Old Fulton St, Brooklyn Heights.  Event is from 5:00 pm until midnight.  Come celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Brooklyn Heights Association with their tribute to great Brooklynite, Walt Whitman.  This free outdoor concert includes the CSC Funk Band, Wingdale Community Singers, Christy and Emily, Prince Rama, and more.

YellowFever and Woven Bones presented by the Seaport.  South Street Seaport, Pier 17, 6:00 pm.  A free concert at South Street Seaport with two great bands from the hottest Texas music scene in Austin.  These are not country music bands.  The duo known as  YellowFever has been described as indie pop and twee punk while Woven Bones sound is garage punk filled with loud sounds and distorted vocals.

10.  Pastis.  9 9th Avenue, Meatpacking District.  Best Croque Monsieur Sandwich in NYC.  A Croque Monieur sandwich is the French version of a hot ham & cheese sandwich.  It is one of the only sandwiches you can eat with a knife and fork.  Considered French fast food it is served in most French bistros in the city.  Pastis has the best.  See: 10 Best French Restaurants in Manhattan, New York City

9.  Junior’s Most Fabulous Cheesecakes & Dessert.  3 Locations – 386 Flatbush Avenue Ext, Brooklyn, 1515 Broadway, Times Square, & 45 Grand Central Terminal.  Best Brisket of Beef Sandwiches.  The original is the Brooklyn location.  The food here is decent but the beef brisket sandwich really stands out is juicy and a large portion size.  You will be full from this sandwich but grab a slice of cheesecake to go to eat later.  See: NYC’s 10 Best New York Cheesecakes

8.  Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop.  174 5th Avenue at 22nd Street, Flatiron.  Best Tuna Salad Sandwich in New York City.   Opened in the 1920s, Eisenberg’s is a simple, inexpensive sandwich restaurant.  Normally I do not eat tuna sandwiches when I am out for lunch but at Eisenberg’s tuna salad is the only food I order.  I also enjoy their tuna melts.  They put their tuna meat in the blender so it comes out smooth.  Patrons rave about the egg salad too.

7.  Luke’s Lobster.  2 Locations – 93 East 7th Street, East Village & 242 East 81st Street, Upper East Side.  Great Lobster Roll for $14, half the price of most other NYC lobster rolls.  Fresh Maine lobster is cooked, wrapped airtight, and shipped to Luke’s Lobster daily.  Each roll contains 4 ounces of lobster claw meat.  The roll is simple for you lobster purest.  The ingredients are lobster meat and a bun.  Mayo, butter, and seasoning optional.

6.  Barney Greengrass.  541 Amsterdam Avenue, Upper West Side.  The king of the Sturgeon sandwich, $17.75.  Barney Greengrass deli has been in business for 100 years with excellent sturgeon, lox, sable and whitefish.  The weekends will be crowded so prepare for a long wait.  See: 10 Best Pastrami Sandwiches in Manhattan, New York City

10. Charles Addams’s New York.  Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue, Harlem. An exhibition of the original artworks by the famous New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams.  See Addams’ creative view of New York City.  The exhibit of Addams’s cartoons is great for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Showing through June 8, 2010.  Suggested adult admission $10.

9. Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue, Upper East Side. An interesting exhibit that brings the past into modern, contemporary art through photographs, videos, film, performance, and site-specific installations. Tickets $18.

8.  Videostudio: New Work From France. The Studio Museum in Harlem, 144 West 125^th Street, Harlem. This exhibit shows video art of three North African artists – Yto Barrada, Bouchra Khalili, and Djamel Kokene – who were born and live in France.  The work shows France as a concept, and displays the relationship between state and relationship.  $7 suggested donation.

7.  Masterpieces of European Painting from Dulwich Picture Gallery. The Frick Collection, 1 East 70^th Street, Upper East Side. The Frick Collection is exhibiting 9 paintings from the famous London Dulwich Picture Gallery, which is famous for their major collection of 17^th and 18^th century paintings.  This NYC art exhibition includes Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn’s Girl at a Window 1645 painting.  $18 adult admission.

6.  Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New York Historical Society. New York Historical Society, 170 Central Park West, Upper West Side. See the first large-scale exhibit from the Grateful Dead Archive, open through July 4, 2010.  Indulge in the music, art and history of America’s famous rock band, The Grateful Dead.  Admission is $12.  Also, see NYC’s Shows & Concerts.

10.  Kaufman Astoria Studios. 34-12 36th Street, Astoria, NY. The Kaufman Astoria Studios are famous for television shows such as Sesame Street, The Cosby Show and large motion pictures including Hair and Carlito’s Way.  The studio does not give tours to the public, but tourists can visit the Studio Cafe.  This famous Queens television and film studio has walls filled with photos of famous celebrities such as Al Pacino, Bill Cosby and Diana Ross that have walked the grounds and worked at the studio.  Located near other Queens attractions such as our #9 pick.

9.  Museum of Moving Images. 35th Avenue & 37th Street, Astoria, Queens, New York. This museum gives the public an understanding and appreciation of the history, art, technology and technique of film, television, and digital media.  Tourists and locals are provided access to moving-image related artifacts through multimedia exhibitions, among other artworks and interactive experiences.  A one-of-a-kind museum, unlike any other in New York City.  See other related articles on NYC museums.

8.  Home of 2 Large Airports – JFK International Airport & LaGuardia Airport. Queens is home to two of the three commercial airports in the NY metropolitan area.  JFK and LaGuardia are most popular because of their central location and proximity to Manhattan; LaGuardia only 8 miles from midtown Manhattan.  They are huge contributors for Queens’ employment and huge benefactors in their economic impact for the city of New York.

7.  P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center. 22-25 Jackson Avenue, Queens. An affiliate to The Museum of Modern Art, P.S. 1 is one of the largest and oldest contemporary art museums in the United States.  If you cannot get enough of MoMA, P.S. 1 will give you plenty more contemporary art exhibits to see from famous artists as well as up and coming talents.  Some exhibits are quite graphic, so be aware if you bring along your children.  The museum is free, but the suggested donation is $5.

6.  Citi Field & New York Mets baseball team. 126th Street & Roosevelt Avenue, Flushing, Queens. The Citi Field park was completed in 2009 and has been an entertainment venue that has featured shows by Paul McCartney and the Dave Matthews Band, as well as being the home to the Major League Baseball team New York Mets.  During the NY Mets’ history, they have won two World Series titles (1969 and 1986), four National League pennants (1969, 1973, 1986, 2000), and five National League East titles (1969, 1973, 1986, 1988, 2006).  Among many more, several famous Mets players are Mike Piazza, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Johan Santana, and Carlos Beltran.  A great attraction for any baseball lover.  See: NYC Sports

12.  Hendrick I. Lott House, 1720.  1940 East 36th Street, Marine Park, Brooklyn.  Originally built by Johannes Lott,a prominent New Yorker, the house was made into a Dutch Colonial, modernized, and expanded to 18 rooms in 1800 for Hendrick.  The estate was 200 acres at its largest when used for farming and was used for that purpose on currently is a on 3/4 acre lot.  The Lott House includes a.  Currently closed for restoration, the Hendrick I. 11.  Fraunces Tavern, 1719.  54 Pearl Street, Downtown, Manhattan.  Currently a museum, tavern, and restaurant is the oldest building in Manhattan.  Etienne “Stephen” DeLancey originally built it as his home from imported Holland yellow bricks.  In 1762 it was sold to Samuel Fraunces and was converted into a tavern called the Queen’s Head.  The place was used by the Sons of Liberty and played a large role in the area during the Revolution.  After the Revolution it was used as office space for the Continental Congress and other federal offices before the US Capitol building was completed.  See:  Best Lounges in NYC

10.  Treasure House, 1700.  Historic Richmond Town, Staten Island.  A simple structure originally built in 1700 by tanner Samuel Grasset with additions on 1740, 1790, and 1860.  Called the Treasure House because one owner claimed 7,ooo dollars worth of British revolutionary war era gold coins were found within its walls in 1860 during a renovation.  See:  Best Things To Do In Staten Island

9.  Voorlezer’s House, 1695.  Historic Richmond Town, Staten Island.  Clapboard house celebrated as the oldest schoolhouse in America.  The second floor reflects this as extra beams were used hold more weight (people).  It was later converted into a residence.  Currently owned by the Staten Island Historical Society.  See:  Best Things To Do In Staten Island

10.  Night & Day. The Museum at FIT, 7th Avenue, Chelsea. This exhibition displays the evolution of woman’s day and evening dress for the past 250 years. Garments, textiles, and accessories include pieces by the famous fashion designers Christian Dior, Charles James, Yves Saint Laurent, Olivier Theyskens for Rochas, and more. 9.  Jedediah Caesar. D’Amelio Terras, 525 W 22nd Street, Chelsea. Jedediah Caesar’s Land Art are contemporary pieces combining and creating art of the earth, resin, the landfill and toxic looking matter.  Unique and engrossing.  This exhibit will appear at the D’Amelio Terras contemporary art gallery through April 24th.

8.  Curious George Saves the Day: The Art of Margret and H.A. Rey. The Jewish Museum, 1109 5th Avenue, Upper East Side. Learn about the creators of the famous Curious George children books and the documentation related to their escape from Nazi occupied Europe.  You will see the correlation and symbolism behind many of the stories. 7.  Interruptions by JoAnn Verburg. Pace/MacGill, 32 East 57th Street, 9th floor, Midtown East. See Verburg’s exhibition of photographs from Spoleto, Italy and her signature multi-panel prints.  This is Verburg’s first solo show in NYC since her acclaimed 2007 MoMa show.  The exhibit is free, and open Tuesday – Saturday.

6.  Rising Currents: Projects for New York’s Waterfront. MoMA, 11 West 53rd Street, Midtown East. To address the rising sea levels of New York and New Jersey, five architectural teams are displaying models, drawings, analytical material to propose solutions to this problem.  Open March 24 – October 11, 2010.  Adult tickets are $20.
